How to cancel ChatGPT Plus (iPhone, Android or web), and when you can get a refund
Cancelling an AI subscription is easy once you know one rule: you have to cancel in the same place you paid. Deleting the app doesn’t stop the charges. Here are the exact steps for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft 365, and what each company’s refund rules really say.
Cancel where you paid. Bought on chatgpt.com: Settings → Billing → Cancel plan. Bought in the iPhone app: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. Bought on Android: Google Play → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel. You keep Plus until the end of the month you paid for. Refunds are rare: OpenAI may refund an unused plan if you ask within 7 days.
First: where did you pay?
Every company here follows the same rule. If you’re not sure, search your email for the receipt: one from Apple means App Store, one from Google Play means Android, one from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google One means the website.
- Deleting the app does not cancel. Google Play says so plainly, and OpenAI warns the same.
- Cancel at least a day before renewal. OpenAI and Anthropic both say 24 hours.
- Cancelling isn’t a refund. It only stops the next charge. A refund is a separate request.
How to cancel ChatGPT Plus, Go or Pro
On the web (chatgpt.com)
- Sign in and open your account menu, then Settings.
- Choose Billing (older versions call it Account).
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
On iPhone or iPad (paid through Apple)
- Open the iPhone Settings app and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions, then ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm. No button and an end date shown means it’s already cancelled.
On Android (paid through Google Play)
- Open the Google Play Store, signed in with the account you paid with.
- Go to Subscriptions and choose ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
After you cancel: paid features continue until the end of the billing period, then the account becomes Free. If you had a free promotion (such as a free month of Go), cancelling may end it immediately, and a promo price never comes back if you resubscribe. Switching from Plus to the cheaper Go plan happens at the end of the cycle, with no refund.
Can’t sign in? If you paid on the web, OpenAI Support can cancel for you if you give the account email plus two of: the card’s last 4 digits, its expiry date, the billing address or the date of the last charge. Never send the full card number.
Can you get a refund?
| Company | Refund rule | How to ask |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Generally non-refundable. Possible for an unused plan within 7 days of the charge, or for billing errors and unauthorized charges. Forgetting to cancel doesn’t count. | Signed in, open the chat bubble on help.openai.com and ask for a refund |
| Claude (Anthropic) | Non-refundable except where the terms or law allow; eligibility checked when you ask | Your name → Get help → Send us a message → Claude Refund Request |
| Google AI / Google One | Non-refundable in most countries | Google One support; Play or Apple purchases go to those stores |
| Microsoft 365 | Refund within 30 days of first purchase or before the first renewal, plus one refund of a recent renewal per product | Decided automatically when you cancel |
| Apple (any app) | Apple decides case by case | reportaproblem.apple.com → Request a refund |
| Google Play (any app) | Within 48 hours through Play; after that, ask the app’s company | Play → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & order history → Report a problem |
In the EU and UK, OpenAI and Anthropic both allow a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of buying. OpenAI’s European terms call it a cooling-off period.
From each company’s help pages, checked Oct 11, 2026. OpenAI tightened its refund rules this year; older articles that say accidental purchases qualify within 14 days are out of date.
How to cancel Claude Pro or Max
- Web or desktop app: click your name or initials in the lower left → Settings → Billing → Cancel.
- iPhone or Android app: tap your initials (top right) → Billing → Manage subscription. Already deleted the app? Use the Apple or Google Play steps above.
You keep Pro or Max until the end of the billing period. Unused Max monthly API credits aren’t refunded. Then you’re on Claude’s free plan.
How to cancel Gemini (Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra)
Google’s AI plans are billed through Google One.
- On a computer: on gemini.google.com click Settings & help → Manage subscription → Cancel membership. Or go to one.google.com → Settings → Cancel membership.
- On Android: in the Gemini app, tap the menu → your profile picture → Manage subscriptions → Cancel membership.
- On iPhone (paid through Apple): iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Google One → Cancel Subscription.
Watch your storage. When the plan ends, your Google storage drops back to 15 GB. If you’re over that, Gmail stops sending and receiving and Drive and Photos stop backing up until you free up space.
How to cancel Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account that pays.
- Next to Microsoft 365, choose Cancel subscription (it may say Upgrade or Cancel).
- At the bottom, choose I don’t want my subscription.
Copilot Pro can no longer be bought; Microsoft now points people to Microsoft 365 Premium. If you still have Copilot Pro, cancel it on the same page. Your storage drops to 5 GB, and OneDrive files over the limit may eventually be deleted, so download what you need first.
Cancel or delete your account?
Usually you only want to cancel. Deleting is permanent:
- ChatGPT: deleting your account cancels a web subscription, but not an Apple one. Cancel in Apple Settings first. Your data is deleted within 30 days, and you can’t reactivate the account.
- Claude: cancel, wait for the paid period to end, export your data, then delete from Settings → Account. Your chats and projects are gone for good.
- Google: don’t delete your Google Account just to stop paying; cancelling the Google One plan is enough.
