How to get ChatGPT Plus for free in 2026: the offers that are real
Most “free ChatGPT Plus” offers online are scams or shared accounts that get banned. A few are real, and they come from OpenAI itself. Here’s who qualifies, how to claim each one, and the catches, checked on OpenAI’s own pages.

US college students: 4 free months (claim by Oct 31)
- Who: full- or part-time college and graduate students at US degree-granting schools. Not high school.
- How: sign in at chatgpt.com/students/2026 and verify through SheerID; your ChatGPT account doesn’t need to use your school email.
- Catches: you need a payment method, it renews at $20 a month, it can’t be claimed through the App Store or Google Play, and cancelling early forfeits the remaining months.

Military and veterans: a free year of Plus
OpenAI announced this on November 10, 2025, and the claim page is still live.
- Who: veterans and retirees discharged from active duty in the last 12 months, and active-duty service members within 12 months of their discharge date.
- How: go to chatgpt.com/veterans-claim, sign in and verify with ID.me. Once verified, your account is credited with the free year.
- Already pay for Plus? You can still claim it. If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, cancel there first, wait until it expires, then claim (how to cancel).
- Extras: OpenAI also offers 100 example chats written by its veteran employees and a getting-started video on the OpenAI Academy, aimed at resumes, interviews, benefits paperwork and relocation.
Early news coverage said verification used SheerID; the claim page now says ID.me.
Teachers: ChatGPT for Teachers
Verified US K-12 teachers, staff, school leaders and district administrators get ChatGPT for Teachers free, until at least June 2027 (OpenAI’s pricing page says June 2027; its help article says June 2028). It isn’t a Plus subscription but a separate workspace with advanced models, file uploads, deep research, image creation and memory, plus student-privacy protections, and it isn’t used for training by default. Is there a free trial of ChatGPT Plus?
OpenAI doesn’t publish a standing free trial. It does sometimes show promotional trials to some users inside ChatGPT. Those are genuine if they appear while you’re signed in on chatgpt.com or in the official app. Free promotions can end immediately if you cancel, and some renew at full price, so put the end date in your calendar.
What to avoid
- “Free Plus account” giveaways and cheap shared accounts. OpenAI’s terms forbid sharing or reselling accounts, and banned accounts aren’t refunded. Whoever controls the login can read your chats.
- Trial or promo codes for sale. OpenAI says promo codes can’t be sold or transferred and can revoke them.
- Fake claim pages that ask for your OpenAI password outside chatgpt.com, or for military ID photos outside ID.me.
