The cheapest legitimate way to pay for ChatGPT in 2026
Search for a cheaper ChatGPT and you’ll find shared accounts, “lifetime” deals and resellers. Most of them break OpenAI’s rules and can cost you your account and your chats. Here are the ways to pay less that actually work, with this month’s prices in four countries.
There’s no annual plan and no public discount code. The legitimate ways to pay less: choose ChatGPT Go ($8 instead of $20), use a student offer if you qualify, buy on the website where it’s cheaper than the app (Mexico), and use real partner promos. Avoid shared or resold accounts: they break OpenAI’s rules and can be closed without a refund.

5 legitimate ways to pay less
1. Pick Go instead of Plus
ChatGPT Go costs about 40% of Plus and is available in every country where ChatGPT is. It gives you more messages, uploads, image generation and memory than Free. 2. Use a student offer, if you qualify
US college students can get 4 free months of Plus if they claim by October 31, 2026. Outside the US there’s no ChatGPT student price, but Google gives students in 140+ countries a free year of Gemini’s paid plan. All offers: student AI discounts by country.
3. Buy on the website, not in the app (in some countries)
App stores set their own price tiers. In Mexico, Go costs MX$110 on chatgpt.com but MX$129 in the iPhone app, about 15% more. In the US and Taiwan the prices are the same either way, so buy wherever is easier to cancel later. If you already pay through the App Store, cancel there first, wait for the period to end, then subscribe on the web.
4. Use real partner promotions
- Mexico, Rappi: Rappi Pro members who are new to ChatGPT get 3 free months of Go; Rappi Pro Black members get 6 months. It only works on accounts that have never paid for ChatGPT.
- Mexico, BBVA: the offer of 3 free months of Go for BBVA card holders ended on August 23, 2026.
Free promotions often end immediately if you cancel, and some renew at the normal price, so put the end date in your calendar.
5. Don’t pay for months you don’t use
Plans are monthly, so you can subscribe for a busy month and drop back to Free afterward. Your account stays; cancel at least a day before renewal.
Why shared and resold accounts are a bad deal
Sellers on Shopee, Facebook groups or Telegram offer “shared” or “family” ChatGPT Plus for a fraction of the price. OpenAI’s terms say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else, and that reselling access is prohibited. What that means for you:
- It can be closed without a refund, and OpenAI won’t help you, because you aren’t the account holder.
- Your chats aren’t private. Everyone with the login can read your conversations, files and memory.
- The seller controls it. They can change the password or stop paying at any time.
- ChatGPT Business isn’t a family plan; it’s for teams of two or more paying per user.
When the free plan is enough
For everyday questions, writing help and short documents, ChatGPT Free is often all you need. Hit the limits only now and then? No. OpenAI says it doesn’t offer annual billing or pre-payment for Go, Plus or Pro. Yearly billing exists only for Business and Enterprise plans.

Is buying a shared ChatGPT account safe?
No. OpenAI’s terms forbid sharing or reselling accounts, and it can close them without a refund. Whoever controls the login can also read every chat, file and memory in it.
Is there a ChatGPT discount code?
Not a public one. Real promotions come through partners (for example Rappi in Mexico for new users) or OpenAI’s own offers, such as 4 free months of Plus for US college students until October 31, 2026. Codes sold online are usually resold or fake.
