ChatGPT Work vs regular ChatGPT (and Claude’s Cowork): what each does and which to use
ChatGPT now has two modes: Chat for quick answers and Work, an agent that can spend hours turning a goal into a finished file. Anthropic took the opposite route and merged its Cowork mode into regular Claude. Here’s what each does, what’s free, and when to use which.
Chat is for quick questions. ChatGPT Work is an agent: give it a goal and it plans the steps and delivers a finished document, spreadsheet, slides, report or simple site, even on a schedule. Free and Go get limited Work in the desktop app only; Plus and Pro get it everywhere. Claude no longer has a separate Cowork mode: since September 16, 2026 it’s merging into regular Claude chat.

| ChatGPT Chat | ChatGPT Work | Claude (Cowork merged in) | |

What ChatGPT Work does
OpenAI launched Work on July 9, 2026 and describes it as an agent that can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours, and turn a goal into finished work. In practice:
- Research and write: “Compare these three health plans from the PDFs and make a one-page summary.”
- Build files: documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, reports, and Sites (simple shareable web pages, in beta).
- Use your apps: with plugins it can work with Google Drive, email, calendars, Slack and more. Type @ plus the app name.
- Run on a schedule: once, repeatedly, or when something changes. Tasks triggered by a new email or Slack message need Plus or higher.
- Ask before acting: you can watch progress, answer its questions, change direction and approve important actions.
On the desktop app (Mac and Windows) you switch between Chat and Work from the menu in the top left; on the web and phone, Work runs in the cloud. Codex, the coding tool, sits in the same app with its own history. More on Codex in Codex vs Claude Code.
Is ChatGPT Work free?
- Free and Go: limited Work, in the desktop app only.
- Plus ($20): Work on desktop, web and mobile, with more usage, plus app-triggered tasks.
- Pro ($100, $200 or $500): longer Work sessions and Pro reasoning.
Work shares one allowance with Codex, and OpenAI warns that complex tasks use more of it. If you only ask quick questions, regular Chat is all you need. Plans compared: Free vs Go vs Plus.
What happened to Claude Cowork?
Anthropic’s Cowork was the same idea: Claude doing longer tasks with your files. On September 16, 2026 Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into “one Claude”:
- You don’t choose a mode any more; Claude decides when a request needs a longer task.
- It rolled out to Pro and Max first; Free and Team are “soon”. If your message box still shows separate Chat and Cowork options, you don’t have it yet.
- Once you have it, you can’t switch back.
- Long tasks keep running in the cloud if you close your laptop, but tasks that use files or apps on your computer need the Claude desktop app open.
- Hand-off and scheduled tasks are listed on Pro ($20) and up. More on the free plan: is Claude free?
Which should you use?
- A quick question or a draft email: regular ChatGPT Chat or Claude. Free is fine.
- “Turn these files into a finished report or deck”: ChatGPT Work (try it free in the desktop app) or Claude on Pro.
- Something that should happen every week: a scheduled task in ChatGPT Work (Plus) or Claude (Pro).
- Writing code: Codex or Claude Code, not Work.
Be careful with agents
An agent that can read your email and act in your apps can also make mistakes at scale. Start with read-only tasks, keep approvals switched on for anything that sends, buys or deletes, and only connect the apps a task needs. Agents can also be tricked by instructions hidden in web pages or documents; our guide to whether connecting apps to AI is safe explains how.

Quick answers
What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI’s agent mode, launched July 9, 2026. Instead of answering one question, it works through a multi-step job, such as researching a topic and producing a document, spreadsheet, slide deck, report or simple website, and it can run on a schedule.
Is ChatGPT Work free?
Partly. Free and Go users get limited Work in the ChatGPT desktop app only. Plus and Pro get it on desktop, web and mobile, with more usage. Work uses the same allowance as Codex, and long tasks use it up faster than chatting.
What’s the difference between ChatGPT Work and Codex?
Work is for finished documents and research; Codex is for writing and testing code in a project. They live in the same desktop app and share the same usage allowance, but have separate views and histories.
What happened to Claude Cowork?
On September 16, 2026 Anthropic began merging Cowork into regular Claude chat. You no longer pick a mode; Claude decides when a request needs a longer task. It rolled out to Pro and Max first, with Free and Team “soon”, and you can’t switch back once you have it.
Which is better, ChatGPT Work or Claude?
For most beginners the difference is smaller than the choice of plan. ChatGPT Work is easier to try for free on the desktop app; Claude’s task features start at Pro ($20). Both handle documents and research; for code, use Codex or Claude Code instead.
