ChatGPT free plan limits in 2026: messages, uploads, images, and how to turn off ads

OpenAI calls the free plan “unlimited”, but almost everything except plain chatting has a cap, and most caps aren’t published. Here’s every limit OpenAI does state, what users report for the rest, when limits reset, and how to make the free plan ad-free.

Why the 12-page limit matters: paste in a long contract or a book chapter and the free plan can lose track of the beginning. Go and Plus take about 40 pages at once in quick mode.

When do the limits reset?

File uploads: daily.
Voice: a rolling 24-hour window.
Deep research: every 30 days from the date you first used it.
Images and other tools: no fixed schedule published. ChatGPT shows when you can use them again.
Upgrading to Plus resets any limit you’ve hit straight away.

Ads on the free plan, and how to turn them off

OpenAI started testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, on the Free and Go plans only. Ads appear below an answer, labeled as sponsored, and OpenAI says they don’t influence what ChatGPT answers. They don’t appear in Temporary Chats, next to sensitive topics like health or politics, or for users under 18.

To go ad-free on the free plan: open Settings → Ads controls, choose to change to the ad-free option and confirm Reduce message limits. The trade-off is real: fewer messages and no image generation or deep research. You can switch back with Show ads in Settings. Go subscribers can’t go ad-free; only Plus and higher have no ads.

How to get more out of the free plan

Combine files into one PDF before uploading: three uploads a day goes further.
Paste text instead of uploading when it’s short.
Save image requests for when you know exactly what you want; write the full prompt first.
Use another free assistant when you hit a limit: Claude’s free plan, Gemini, or free Copilot, which gives 15 fast images a day through Bing Image Creator.

When is it worth upgrading?

Go ($8): you keep hitting upload, image or memory limits but are happy with the same model. It may still show ads.
